Plastering and rendering, across the Wirral

Walls and ceilings done flat and done once.

Skimming, ceilings, boarding, rendering and lime work from Birkenhead to Meols. We tap the wall before we price it, and we tell you when the job you are describing is somebody else's trade.

The question that decides your quote

Almost every plastering quote on the Wirral comes down to one thing: what is already on the wall. A solid Victorian wall with lime plaster on it, an interwar wall whose plaster has gone hollow in patches, and a modern dot and dab board are three different jobs that look identical under wallpaper.

So the first visit is a tap test, not a look. Hollow plaster sounds dull and dead; sound plaster rings. Where it is hollow it has to come off whatever the plan was, and where it is sound it can usually be bonded and skimmed for a fraction of the price. Getting that wrong in either direction is what makes two quotes for the same room differ by more than they should.

The same logic runs outside. Render that is cracked is a repair; render that sounds hollow has already let go of the wall behind it and painting it is money spent on nothing.

How a job runs

  1. 1
    You send the details

Form, phone or WhatsApp. A photo of the wall or ceiling and a rough idea of the size tells us most of what we need.

  2. 2
    We come and look

Walls get tapped, not just looked at. Hollow plaster and hollow render sound different from sound ones, and that is the difference between a patch and a strip.

  3. 3
    You get it in writing

What is coming off, what is going on, how many working days and how many drying days, and the things that would change the number.

  4. 4
    The work, then the clean

Floors and anything staying get covered before a bag is opened. The muck goes with us.

What the work looks like

Example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such. They are not photographs of our own jobs and nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Areas we cover

Twelve towns across the peninsula. The pages are not the same page with the name swapped: what is built in a place decides what the plastering job is, and a Birkenhead terrace and a Greasby estate semi are not the same job.

Questions people ask before they ring

How much does plastering cost on the Wirral?

It is priced by what is coming off rather than by the square metre alone. A sound wall that needs bonding and a skim is the cheap end. A wall taken back to brick, rendered and skimmed is several times that for the same area. Ceilings cost more than walls because of the angle, and lime work costs more again because it goes on in coats that each have to set. We give you the number in writing with the assumptions next to it, so you can see which of those you are buying.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

It needs to be dry all the way through, not just dry to touch, and that is usually several days to a few weeks depending on thickness, the time of year and how much air is moving through the room. Fresh plaster goes from dark patches to an even pale pink when it is there. The first coat should be a watered down mist coat, because full strength emulsion on new plaster sits on the surface and peels.

Do you do small jobs, or just whole houses?

Both. A single ceiling, a patch and skim, or one room are all normal work. The one thing worth knowing is that getting set up costs much the same whatever the size, so one room is rarely a tenth of the price of ten.

Can you plaster over a damp wall?

No, and we would rather lose the job than do it. New plaster on an untreated damp wall blows again and the salts come through the new finish. Damp treatment is a different trade. Once somebody has done it and the wall has dried, the replastering is ours and it goes on a render coat with a salt retardant rather than straight onto brick.

Can you skim over artex?

Usually yes, if it is sound and the pattern is not too deep. It is bonded and then skimmed. Where the pattern is heavy, overboarding gives a better flat. Artex made before the mid nineteen eighties can contain asbestos fibres, which is exactly why covering it is the normal answer rather than scraping or sanding.

Do you clean up?

Floors, stairs and anything staying in the room get covered before anything is opened. Waste goes with us rather than sitting in the front garden until the weekend.

Which parts of the Wirral do you cover?

Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Bromborough, Heswall, West Kirby, Hoylake, Caldy, Greasby, Irby, Meols and Moreton.

What will you not do?

Damp proofing, stone repair and structural work are other trades, and we will tell you that rather than take the job and improvise. We do the plastering and rendering, including the replastering that follows somebody else's damp work.

Tell us what the wall is doing

Send a photo and a rough size and you will get a straight answer about whether it is a patch, a skim or a strip.

Get in touch

Tell us what the wall or ceiling is doing and roughly how much of it there is. A photograph on the form answers half the questions before anybody rings you back.

Goes straight to us. No obligation, and we will not pass your details on.
