What goes on the wall, and what is under it

Rendering is a coating and a coating is only as good as what it is stuck to. That sounds obvious and it is the single most common thing skipped. A wall gets rendered because it looks tired, and eighteen months later the new render is cracking in the same places the old one was, because nobody found out why the old one cracked.

So the first half of a rendering job is the wall. Is the existing surface sound or hollow. Is there movement, and is it live or historic. Are the beads, stops and bellcast details right, because most render failures start at an edge or a junction rather than in the middle of a panel. Is anything ferrous fixed through it that will rust and jack a crack open.

Then the system. Sand and cement is the traditional answer, it is cheaper, and it is painted, which means a repainting cycle. Through coloured systems cost more and have the colour in the material, so there is no paint film to fail. On the Wirral coast that difference matters more than it does inland, and it has its own page. Often asked about alongside k rend and silicone render, render repairs and pebbledash removal.

The substrate

Sound, hollow, moving or wet. Checked by tapping the whole elevation rather than looking at it from the drive.

The details

Beads, stops, bellcast and the junctions around openings. Most failures start here, not in the middle of a wall.

Sand and cement or through coloured

One is cheaper and gets repainted. The other costs more and does not. Exposure decides which is better value where you are.

What this job looks like

Example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such. They are not photographs of our own jobs and nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Why people use us

Scaffold, weather and the honest timetable

Render has a minimum working temperature and it must not be rained on before it sets, so winter work is a weather window.

  • Whole elevation tapped before the price is given
  • Scaffold shown as its own line rather than buried
  • Beads and details specified, not assumed
  • Working days and curing days stated separately

Frequently asked questions

External rendering: the questions people ask

The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.

How much does rendering a house cost?

It is priced per square metre of elevation plus access, and the two things that move it most are how much preparation the wall needs and whether scaffold is simple. A quote that gives one number with no mention of the substrate or the access has not been round the back yet.

Can you render over existing render?

Over sound, well keyed render, yes. Over hollow render, no, because you are fixing new material to something that has already let go. The whole elevation gets tapped so you know which you have before you buy anything.

Will rendering stop my damp?

Not by itself, and anybody who says it will is selling. Render keeps driven rain off a wall, which helps a lot with penetrating damp. It does nothing for rising damp or condensation, and on a solid wall built to breathe, the wrong render can make the inside worse.

How long does render take to cure?

Days rather than hours, and longer in cold weather. It needs to be kept off direct sun and off driving rain while it goes. That is why a render date in January is a weather window rather than a promise.

Photographs of each elevation and a note of which side gets the weather are enough to start.

About Wirral Plastering

How the work is actually organised

Wirral Plastering takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. That means one person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is coming on Tuesday.

It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name, because the way a job is run changes what you can expect from it. What you get is a written scope, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.

What we will tell you we are not

Damp proofing is a different trade and so is stone repair, and both come up constantly on Wirral housing. We do the plastering that follows damp work and the lime render that sits around stone, and we will tell you when the thing you are describing needs somebody else first.

Structural work is the same. A crack that runs in a line rather than a map pattern is not a plastering question and filling it is not an answer.

No photographs of our work, and why the site says so

There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company's gallery.

Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.
