Polished and venetian plaster

A finish, not a plaster job with a different bag

Venetian and polished plaster are decorative finishes: very thin coats, applied and compressed with a trowel so the surface burnishes and the light moves across it. The depth people like is a real optical effect from layers of translucent material, and it is why a photograph never quite shows it.

The thing that decides whether it works is the substrate. These finishes are millimetres thick, so they hide nothing. Every undulation, every trowel line and every filled screw hole in the wall underneath will be visible in the finished surface, and more visible than it was before, because a polished surface reflects raking light. So the real work is getting the base flat, and the decorative coats are the last day.

It is worth being clear about where it suits. A feature wall, a fireplace surround, a hallway, a bathroom with the right sealing. It is not a cheaper alternative to painting a whole house and nobody should sell it as one. If you want it, say which wall and what light it gets, because north light and a west facing window give very different results from the same material. Often asked about alongside plastering, skimming and ceilings.

The base has to be flat

The finish is millimetres thick and hides nothing. Most of the programme is preparation and that is where the cost sits.

The light in the room

Raking light is what makes the depth visible and also what finds every flaw. Which wall and which window matters.

Sample first

Colour and sheen are chosen from a physical sample made for your room, not from a screen or a brochure.

What this job looks like

Example images of the kind of work described, each one labelled as such. They are not photographs of our own jobs and nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Why people use us

Priced as a finish, not by the metre

Preparation, coats and burnishing are separate stages, and the quote shows them separately.

  • Substrate taken flat and signed off before any finish goes on
  • A physical sample made before the wall is committed
  • Coats and burnishing stages set out
  • Honest about where this finish does and does not suit

Frequently asked questions

Polished and venetian plaster: the questions people ask

The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.

What is the difference between venetian and polished plaster?

They overlap and the words get used interchangeably. Broadly, venetian plaster is the lime based family burnished to a marble like sheen, and polished plaster is the wider term covering those and the modern equivalents. What matters in practice is the look you want, which is settled with a sample.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Yes, with the right material and sealing, and it is a popular place for it. The detail that matters is the sealing and what happens at the junctions, which is part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

Can you put it over an existing wall?

Over a wall that is flat and sound, yes. Over a wall that is not, the preparation comes first and it is the bigger part of the job. There is no version of this finish that hides a poor surface.

Is it hard to repair if it gets damaged?

Harder than paint, because a patch has to be blended into a burnished surface rather than rolled over. Small damage can usually be worked in. It is worth knowing before choosing it for a hallway with bikes in it.

About Wirral Plastering

How the work is actually organised

Wirral Plastering takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. That means one person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is coming on Tuesday.

It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name, because the way a job is run changes what you can expect from it. What you get is a written scope, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.

What we will tell you we are not

Damp proofing is a different trade and so is stone repair, and both come up constantly on Wirral housing. We do the plastering that follows damp work and the lime render that sits around stone, and we will tell you when the thing you are describing needs somebody else first.

Structural work is the same. A crack that runs in a line rather than a map pattern is not a plastering question and filling it is not an answer.

No photographs of our work, and why the site says so

There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company's gallery.

Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.
