Lime plaster and lime render

Why lime keeps coming up on the Wirral

A solid wall built with lime mortar was designed to let moisture move through it and evaporate off the face. There is no cavity and no membrane; the breathing is the damp proofing. Put a cement render or a gypsum skim on that wall and you close the route, so the moisture goes sideways and comes out at a skirting, or stays in the wall and works on the mortar over a decade.

The Wirral has a lot of that construction. Victorian and Edwardian villas in West Kirby and Hoylake, sandstone property in Caldy, Heswall and Irby, the older streets of Birkenhead, and Port Sunlight in Bebington, which is a conservation area of listed buildings where lime is generally not a preference at all. Google suggests lime plasterer Wirral and lime render Wirral as real searches, and this housing stock is why.

Lime costs more and takes longer, and that is not a markup. It goes on in coats, each one has to carbonate before the next, and it cannot be forced with a heater without ruining it. On the right wall the comparison is not lime against gypsum. It is lime against gypsum plus the damp work that follows gypsum on a wall that cannot pass moisture. On a modern cavity wall it would be money wasted, so the first job is establishing which you have. Often asked about alongside replastering after damp, polished and venetian plaster and plastering.

Does the wall need to breathe

Solid construction, soft mortar you can scratch, no damp proof course. Those want lime. A modern cavity wall does not.

Time, not markup

Coats that each have to set in their own time. The programme is longer and it cannot be compressed.

Why people use us

Working with the building rather than against it

On a breathable wall, lime is the material the wall was designed for. Everything else is a compromise with consequences.

  • Construction established before any material is chosen
  • Coats and carbonation time set out in the programme
  • Honest about when a modern wall does not need this
  • Stone repair identified as the separate trade it is

Frequently asked questions

Lime plaster and lime render: the questions people ask

The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.

How do I know if my house needs lime?

The wall tells you. Solid brick or stone with no cavity, mortar soft enough to scratch with a key, and no damp proof course usually means a wall built to breathe. A cavity wall from the thirties onward with hard cement mortar does not, and lime on it would be spending for nothing.

Is lime plaster much more expensive than gypsum?

Yes, in both materials and time. The useful comparison on a breathable wall is not lime against gypsum, it is lime against gypsum plus the damp problems that follow it. On a wall that does not need lime, gypsum is the right answer and we will say so.

How long does lime take to dry?

Much longer than gypsum, and it is carbonation rather than drying. Coats go on with time between them and the finish is not ready to decorate quickly. It also cannot be rushed with heaters. The programme is part of the quote so you can plan round it.

Do you do the stonework as well?

No. Stone repair and repointing are their own trade and we would rather hand you to the right person than improvise on the part we are not the right people for. What we do is the lime plaster and lime render on and around it.

About Wirral Plastering

How the work is actually organised

Wirral Plastering takes the job as main contractor and puts the labour on it. That means one person quotes it, one person is answerable for it, and you are not chasing three numbers to find out who is coming on Tuesday.

It is worth saying plainly rather than implying a van and a family name, because the way a job is run changes what you can expect from it. What you get is a written scope, a date, and somebody whose problem it is if the date moves.

What we will tell you we are not

Damp proofing is a different trade and so is stone repair, and both come up constantly on Wirral housing. We do the plastering that follows damp work and the lime render that sits around stone, and we will tell you when the thing you are describing needs somebody else first.

Structural work is the same. A crack that runs in a line rather than a map pattern is not a plastering question and filling it is not an answer.

No photographs of our work, and why the site says so

There are no job photographs on this site. The slots are placeholders and they are labelled as placeholders. Nothing here is a stock picture presented as a job and nothing is borrowed from another company's gallery.

Real photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them, and not before. The same goes for anything that looks like a customer quote. There is a section built and ready for them, switched off, and it stays that way until there are real ones with permission attached.
