Pebbledash removal
Moreton has a great deal of pebbledash, and it is the thing people most often want gone. It can be removed and the wall re-rendered smooth, or it can be rendered over where it is sound and well keyed. Which of those is right is decided by tapping it: pebbledash that is already hollow has to come off whatever the plan was, and dash that is solid is a perfectly good base to work on.
External rendering and render repairs
Flat, open and close to the coast means wind carries sand and salt across the whole town, and render here weathers faster on the seaward side than the sheltered one. Cracking and hollow panels are the usual finds.
Plastering and skimming
Interwar semis with original plaster reaching the end of its life, and postwar bungalows that are board throughout. Two different jobs in the same street.
Ceilings
Bungalows put the whole ceiling under the roof with no floor above, so ceiling work here is often tied up with loft insulation and ventilation. Worth looking at together rather than separately.

Questions from Moreton
Is it cheaper to remove pebbledash or render over it?
Rendering over sound dash is cheaper, because taking it off is labour and waste before any new material goes on. It is only the right answer if the dash is genuinely sound and keyed though, and that is settled by tapping the wall rather than by looking at it.
Will removing pebbledash damage the brick underneath?
It can, and that is worth knowing before you start. Dash was often applied because the brick underneath was poor or had been damaged, so what is revealed is sometimes the reason it was covered. We would rather open a test area and show you than price a smooth render and discover it later.

Twelve towns across the peninsula. The pages are not the same page with the name swapped: what is built in a place decides what the plastering job is, and a Birkenhead terrace and a Greasby estate semi are not the same job.
